So here comes another "I Love Texas" song.
Took sweet Sue to the square dance;
We danced the do-si-do.
Allemande left to the corner,
We sashayed around the floor.
I said, "Come out in the moonlight,
There's a question in my heart."
She threw her arms around me
And she said before we start:
Here comes another "I Love Texas" song.
It seems to me if you love Texas,
You can't do no wrong.
Hey, if you've been away for just one day,
You've been away too long,
So here comes another "I Love Texas" song.
Out in the wide Pacific,
Middle of World War Two,
John Wayne led the US Marines
And the US Cavalry too.
Climbing up Suribachi,
Planting the flag in the sand,
Just before they shot the Duke
He issued his last command.
Now listen up here, pilgrim:
Here comes another "I Love Texas" song.
It seems to me if you love Texas,
You can't do no wrong.
Hey, if you've been away for just one day,
You've been away too long,
So here comes another "I Love Texas" song.
Texas has its twisters;
Texas has its droughts.
When hard times come to Texas,
There's folks who'll help you out.
Seldom is heard a discouraging word
From a true-born Texan's mouth,
And everyone who's a loyal son
Lift up his head and shout:
Here comes another "I Love Texas" song.
It seems to me if you love Texas,
You can't do no wrong.
Hey, if you've been away for just one day,
You've been away too long,
So here comes another "I Love -
So here comes another "I Love -
So here comes another "I Love Texas" song.
(Words and music by Bob Gibson and Tom Paxton, 1981)
Notes: This is one of the songs Tom wrote together with Bob Gibson. The only recording of this song I know is a duet by Tom and Bob from a 1981 TV broadcast concert. When Bob took the last verse, he had blown it completely, because he changed the order of the elements involved, requiring him to have a different rhyme scheme. Amazingly, he immediately made up a new verse. What he actually sang was:
Texas has its droughts;
Texas has its twisters.
I blew that line quickly -
I should've written about my sister!
We could start this tape all over again
But we're almost through with the verse.
Anyway I might make another mistake,
And it could be much worse!
The audience erupted for Bob's quick thinking. The event was documented in Bob Gibson: I Come for to Sing.
