We Live on the Water

A Dm We live on the water, my family and I. A E We go where the current takes us, and one by one we die. D A We go where the current takes us to the waving trees and sand, Dm A - E Where the men with the guns are waiting and they never let us land.

The hunger is endless; water running low.
From coastline to coastline, forever we must go.
The men with the guns come crowding and they force us out to sea,
And I don't know where we're sailing, if they know, they don't tell me.

E7 D A And I don't know why they hate me, and I don't know who they are. E7 D A We can't sail this sea forever, though we've already come so far. Dm A But the men with the guns seem angry, that's the worst of the mystery. Dm A E For I don't know who sent them to point their guns at me.

The old ones are dying, we bury them at dawn.
A final look at their faces, then they're over the side and gone.
Every one of us growing weaker as each body slowly fails.
Even the youngest of us weaken, hardly able to set the sail.

And I don't know why they hate me, and I don't know who they are.
We can't sail this sea forever, though we've already come so far.
But the men with the guns seem angry, that's the worst of the mystery.
For I don't know who sent them to point their guns at me.

We live on the water, my family and I.
We go where the current takes us, and one by one we die.

(Words and music by Tom Paxton, 1980)
