All Quiet on the Western Front

G F The oil is flowing in the ocean so blue. C D The people are crazy; they don't know what to do. G Em C And the famines will follow the freeways so new. Am D Em And it's all quiet on the western front. G F The murdering missiles, they point to the sky. C D The loyal townspeople are ready to die. G Em C And it's ever so lonely to live with a lie. Am D G And it's all quiet on the western front. Am D Em I think I'll join the National Liberation Front.

The boys on the bases, they play at the ball.
The stock market rises; the stock market falls.
And the high school principal is led to the wall.
And it's all quiet on the western front.

The civilized nations abide by the code,
They learn from the victors to do what they're told.
Even Israel's marching down Germany's road.
And it's all quiet on the western front.
I think I'll join the National Liberation Front.

The war babies try to crawl back to the womb.
Assassins and astronauts race to the moon.
And Eisenhower lies like a saint in his tomb.
And it's all quiet on the western front.

I sit on my back porch, I sing on my song,
I wait for the earthquake to come with the dawn.
If there was a God, it wouldn't take him so long.
And it's all quiet on the western front.
I guess I'll join the American Liberation Front.

(Words and music by Phil Ochs, 1969)

Notes: The above chords are based on a 1969 live version from Philadelphia.

February 27, 2021 - Thanks to Jan Hauenstein for correcting the chords on this page. The C - G progression I mistakenly wrote on the previous version, should be an F chord instead. Also thanks to Jan and Peter Feld for reminding me that the word "flay" in the third verse is actually "play". The 1969 live version was too muffled for me to figure out the correct chords and words... Fortunately they released the Best of the Rest album!
